Piazzale Brigata Legnano
Città Alta, Bergamo
From the funicular of the Upper Town, go up the hill of Sant’Eufemia to reach the complex of Rocca, one of the favourite places of Bergamo citizens. The short walk is well rewarded by the exceptional panoramic 360° view that you enjoy from the tower: all in a glance, in addition to the wonders of the Upper Town, the Orobie Alps and the entire plain, until you see the skyline of Milan.
The Rocca, a fortress dating back to the 14th century, still traces the military function of the centuries: follow the patrol walkway, discover the rescue door and enter the bombardiers’ house, now home to the 19th Century Museum.
The itinerary tells about the town’s transformations between the ancient regime and the Italian unification. You will learn about Bergamo in a full Risorgimento through the stories of the 180 Bergamasque citizens of the expedition of the Thousand who joined Garibaldi in his heroic endeavour.

FOR THE SAKE OF THE COUNRTY
Visit the Museum of the 19th Century: the two floors focus on the history of those who “made Italy”, you will discover who the protagonists of a long Risorgimento were, made not only of red shirts, muzzle-loading rifles, or military uniforms, but also of letters, paintings, sculptures, objects of everyday life. Conclude your leap in the period of great patriotic ideals with a romantic walk in the terraces and in the park of Rocca.
TWO MUSEUMS, A COMPOSER
Two crucial years for the city of Bergamo – and not only – in two connected museums: 1797, the end of the Venetian domination and the arrival of the revolutionary ideals from France, but also the year the famous Bergamasque composer Gaetano Donizetti was born; 1848, Donizetti dies and in the meantime the riots break out, as well as the first war of independence against Austria, while the long journey towards a united Italy continues. In the halls of the Museum of the 19th Century, discover Bergamo in a crucial era, continue the visit to the Museum of Donizetti and you will see collective history interweaving individual history.
